What is the Kaleidoscope Real World Video Challenge Contest?

Kaleidoscope is an online video contest to get youth (ages 13 and under and 14 to 18) across Canada talking about and involved in global issues.

Who is sponsoring the contest?

The video challenge contest is led by the Inter-Council Network (ICN), a body made up of seven regional councils across Canada. The contest is funded in part by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

How do I enter the contest??

To submit a video you must:
• be 18 years of age and under and a Canadian resident
• fill in the Submission and Consent form
• Submit your high resolution video file online or by mail to:

Kaleidoscope Challenge c/o Alberta Council for Global Cooperation
#205, 10816A - 82 Avenue
Edmonton, Alberta  T6E 2B3

When is the contest deadline?

March 31, 2011.

What can my movie be about?

It could be about a global issue, or something in your very own community. Show us what you are doing at home, at school, or in your community to change the world. We want to know why you think global issues are important, and what you are doing to make a difference.

No action is too big or too small!

Do I need to have any experience or fancy equipment to make videos?

No! We encourage anyone to make a video and to use whatever equipment you have available (even a cell phone!). However in order to maintain the highest possible quality, please avoid compressing your video file when submitting to the contest.

Where can I get help in making a video?

We have provided some resources on making and uploading digital videos here. There are also free video skills workshops being offered across Canada! Click here to see what’s happening in your area.

Can I submit a video from another contest or project?

Yes! Videos less than five minutes long can be specifically created for this project or adapted from other videos or projects which you feel fit the criteria.

What are the judging criteria?

All submissions will be judged by the following criteria:
* Originality and Creativity

* Level of understanding of the global issue

* Personal growth and learning

You can download the judging criteria here.

Submissions must be less than five minutes in length, under 100 MB and preferably provided in .MOV or .MPG format.

What if my video is in a different file format?

Our website works best with videos in .MOV or .MPG format. Please try to save your video in one of these formats. If you are unable to do this, then just upload your file as it is. We will accept all file formats and convert them to .MOV or .MPG on our end.

If you are having problems uploading your file, then please burn it onto a CD or DVD and submit it by mail, along with a completed consent form. We will accept all submissions postmarked before the March 31 deadline. It’s also a good idea to email info@videochallenge.ca to let us know your video is on its way.

Submissions can be mailed to:
Kaleidoscope Challenge c/o Alberta Council for Global Cooperation
#205, 10816A - 82 Avenue Edmonton, Alberta T6E 2B3

You can also email your submission to info@videochallenge.ca. If it is over 100 MB, please compress the file before sending it. Be sure to email us the answers to all the questions on the consent form. We will accept all submissions emailed before midnight on March 31.

Does everyone on my team have to be 18 and under?

Yes, everyone involved in creating your video has to be 18 and under. This applies to directing, writing, filming, and producing. The one exception is acting. You can involve actors who are over 18 if you think an older actor will better suit the themes you are dealing with.

You can still get guidance and support from people over 18, but the production work itself has to be done entirely by people 18 and under.

Where can I get involved in my community?

Find out more about the council in your area here.
