Guest Post: Rebecca’s Tips for Clean Eating

Transitioning to a clean eating diet can take a lot of time. It is hard to break many of the habits we make when we eat badly. Clean eating is different for everyone. Even when old habits come to the surface, it is important to keep pressing forward to replace them with new, healthier alternatives. Here are a few of my tips for people new to clean eating.


Define Your Diet

Because clean eating is different for everyone, it can mean something different from person-to-person. If you are following a specific diet, take a look at books, websites, and check out blogs connected to that diet. This will give you a better idea of what you are getting into. You will also figure out what will be hard for you and help you brainstorm ways to change how you think about food. Generally, you are adopting a diet of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains. You stay far away from anything processed or bleached. If you can’t read the ingredient list, you probably shouldn’t be eating it.  


Reward Yourself


It is healthy to reward yourself every once in awhile. This helps many people from breaking and going back to their old diet. You need to decide when to treat yourself and stick to that schedule. You can choose to have one treat meal weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or even yearly. Some people even choose one day a week to eat whatever they want.


Prepare Your Kitchen

Before you start your diet go through everything in your kitchen. Get rid of things you won’t be able to eat. These will only tempt you. Check your frozen foods for added sugar. Make room for meals you can freeze for later. This will make clean eating much easier when you are too tired to cook a whole meal from scratch. Make a list as you clean things out. You will want to find clean replacements for all of these items.


Have the Right Tools


You will want to think more about pre-preparing meals on a clean eating diet. You will want extra lasagna pans, tupperware, and more. A foodsaver is great for keeping vegetables and meats fresh. Fruit juices are nearly impossible to buy clean at a store. A masticating juicer will make healthy juice packed with vitamins and minerals, instead of sugar and preservatives.


Prepare Foods the Day You Buy Them

Having some chopped veggies and marinated chicken on hand will help you stick to your diet. It is really easy to fall back on old habits if you aren’t being mindful when you shop. This will help you think about your weekly menu and keep food waste to a minimum.


Plan for Meals Out


It can be hard to eat clean on the go. You may feel tempted to pull up to that drive-through. Get a cooler to combat this temptation. Choose your favorite snacks and meals and bring them with you. This will keep you from cheating when hunger hits out of nowhere.


Find Clean Alternatives to Meal Favorites

Just because you are eating clean doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to your favorite meals. There are tons of ways to substitute clean ingredients into nearly any recipe. It probably isn’t the best idea to indulge in your favorite treats everyday, but eating healthier alternatives to your favorites will help you stick to clean eating and bring you to your goals.
